If you haven’t registered yet, please do so soon—we’d love to see you there!
The IEEE PES General Meeting was held in Austin in late July and the TO&P team was well represented. We had a great time seeing many of you and also were able to share insights with academia and industry on numerous topics. The TOP team contributed more panels than can be listed here, as well as engaged with task forces and at the technical council. A few highlights include:
Maren Ihlemann and Erik Ela moderated a panel on flexibility in resource adequacy
Eknath Vittal and Parag Mitra gave a tutorial on Methods to Address Emerging Challenges and Opportunities in Transmission Planning
Vikas Singhvi spoke on a panel on AI/LLM applications for transmission operations
Sudipta Dutta chaired a panel on Power system monitoring and stability analysis with high penetration of IBRs that was such a hit, there were people crowding the doorways to get in!
The challenges of increasing data centre load, integration of IBRs, and resource adequacy were frequent conversations at IEEE.
A special congratulations goes out to Deepak Ramasumabranian who was awarded for outstanding standard or guide at the Awards Gala.
Meeting Partners in Mexico 🌍
In the past several years, the Transmission Operations and Planning team have had a number of key collaborations with our Mexican partners, particularly long standing members Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), and more recently, CENACE, the system operator for Mexico. On a recent visit, Aidan Tuohy met with CENACE leadership to further increase our engagement there, particularly in topics related to transmission operations, electricity markets and training. He also met with colleagues from CFE to discuss ongoing activities in transmission planning, electricity markets, and IBR integration. This builds on recent activities related to energy storage integration and operator training for managing increasing shares of renewables in the system. We look forward to continuing to support the needs of our Mexican members, while bringing the learnings from there to our broader collaborative
HVDC Workshop
In June 2025, EPRI, along with Southwest Power Pool (SPP) co-hosted in Denver, CO, the Navigating HVDC Integration: Technologies, Operation, and Control workshop.
Nearly 100 industry experts gathered to explore cutting-edge developments in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology, evaluate the pace of HVDC deployment across North America, and address the complexities of integrating HVDC into existing power systems.
Over the course of a day and a half filled with technical presentations, dynamic panel discussions, and collaborative dialogue, participants identified numerous opportunities for EPRI to lead and support collaborative R&D. These efforts aim to unite utilities, ISOs/RTOs, technology providers, research institutions, and other key stakeholders in advancing impactful HVDC integration.

Did you miss a mid-year webcast? Don't fret - they are all recorded and open to all TOP members through the epri.com cockpit. This is a great opportunity to learn about developments across the program and engage with the broader research community. This year's webcasts included topical discussions, including a deep dive into DynaDOR CMD, PMU-Based Inertia Estimation and Monitoring, and FERC Order 1920 developments.
The 2026 roll out is a chance to learn what our research focus will be in 2026 and share your priorities with us. You can see the recording of the webcast across all of TO&P, and dive deeper into the project sets, with a series of pre-recorded videos from each of us. We encourage you to watch at your lesiure and share with others in your organization.
