2025 WINTER ADVISORY

It was great to see many of you in Charlotte for our 2025 Winter Advisory Meetings. Thank you for your great participation in helping guide our R&D, share industry challenges, and needs and support technology transfer of the research. For those of you unable to attend, or who attended virtually, we missed you!

The roundtable discussions focused on the use of AI in operations and planning, highlighting various use cases such as AI for interconnection, business efficiency, modeling/simulation and forecasting. Participants also explored the implications of regulations and the value delivery of EPRI's research and technology transfer.

💡Key sessions included leveraging AI in operations and planning, managing inverter-based resources (IBRs) in operations, and enhancing resilience in operations. The meeting emphasized the importance of integrating power electronics-based resources, addressing large load interconnections, and developing robust compliance verification frameworks. Additionally, the event featured discussions on technical support for regulatory compliance, special studies for transmission planning, and the future of integrated planning and operations.

CIGRE Green Book on Power System Dynamics

    GreenBook
    READ THE BOOK

Kudos to EPRI staff: Zia Emin, Inalvis Alvarez Fernandez, Aboutaleb Haddadi, Adrian Kelly, Parag Mitra & Deepak  Ramasubramanian, who recently contributed to the development of a new CIGRE Green Book.

This new Green Book serves as a reference guide for practicing engineers worldwide, helping them to understand, model, and analyze various forms of system stability with greater confidence.

It covers perspectives from power system operations, planning, and grid connections, and aims to equip engineers to address any identified instabilities.

While the primary focus is on practicing engineers in the power industry, the book is also designed to be relevant and timely for researchers and academics. It includes the latest and emerging trends, research needs, and forecasts on how dynamic phenomena and analysis approaches will evolve in future power systems.

Additionally, it explores how disciplines outside of power engineering can contribute to more timely and efficient decision-making, acknowledging that significant research and development are still needed during the energy transition

     Protections Task Force Meeting

    Protections TF

The annual EPRI Grid Protection Task Force meeting for projects P37.103, P40B, and P173A was held on March 12th and 13th in Charlotte. EPRI staff were joined by over 30 grid protection experts for many lively discussions, including sessions on:

    • IBR modeling, ride-through challenges, and protection impacts
    • Hands-on demos of EPRI’s new AI Protection Assistant for ASPEN OneLiner, Protection Settings Peer Review Tool, and Short Circuit Model Conversion Tool
    • Lessons learned from recent blackouts in Balkan states, Sri Lanka, and Chile
    • Theory vs reality for power swing protection settings and testing
    • Tools and methods for training the next generation of protection engineers

For information about this and future protection events please contact Sean McGuinness at smcguinness@epri.com
