DER Gateways - Bridging the Gap Between Utility and DER

        DERGateways

The DER functionalities specified in grid codes, and the associated communication interfaces are not suitable for direct integration with the monitoring and control systems (e.g., DERMS). These functionalities were designed only to expose the raw, inherent capabilities of the DER, but (intentionally) omits additional logic, management features, and security requirements because these were believed to vary by utility and region. Added business logic, centralized management, protocol translation, and cyber security capabilities are needed by utilities – DER network gateways can provide these capabilities.

EPRI’s new Evaluation and Economic Feasibility Analysis of Commercial DER Gateways supplemental proposes to expand the role and uses of the local DER network gateway, enabling it with critical features tailored for a utility grid with high DER penetration. Key tasks include:

        • Identifying several commercial DER gateway vendors and testing these systems and their capabilities to meet the documented gateway requirements.
        • Evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of gateways, security functions, and associated features to inform utilities, vendors, and policy makers.
        • Convening and facilitating a working group to document DER integration needs that can be met by DER network gateways.
        • Continuing to document the requirements of the gateway for more advanced applications that involve energy storage.

The project launches later this summer, join your peers in this important industry discussion. Want to learn more about DER gateways or EPRI’s project, let us know at Ben Ealey (Manager, Info and Comm Tech for DER Integration) - bealey@epri.com / Xavier Francia (Principal Technical Leader, Cyber Security) - xfrancia@epri.com.
